Badaun auch Badayun (Hindi बदायूँ , Urdu ‏بدایوں‎) ist eine Stadt im nördlichen-zentralen Bereich des Bundesstaates Uttar Pradesh in Indien. Die Stadt ist der Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Badaun.

Geschichte

Der Legende nach wurde Badaun im Jahr 905 gegründet. Eine Inschrift, die auf das 12.Jh. datiert wird, gibt eine Liste von 12 Königen, die von der Stadt aus regierten. Das erste gesicherte historische Ereignis ist die Eroberung der Stadt durch Qutb-ud-Din Aibak 1196. Die Stadt wurde danach eine wichtige Festung im nördlichen Grenzgebiet des Sultanats von Delhi. Die Stadt wurde 1571 durch ein Feuer zerstört und 100 Jahre später begann die Bedeutung der Stadt zu schwinden, da der Verwaltungssitz nach Bareilly verlegt wurde. 1838 wurde die Stadt Verwaltungssitz eines britischen Distrikts.[1]

Badaun hat 490.000 Einwohner (2001), die zu 58% Hindus und zu 41% Muslime sind.
