Back Door Man ist ein Song von Howlin’ Wolf, geschrieben von Willie Dixon. Er wurde 1961 als B-Seite von Wolfs Wang Dang Doodle auf Chess Records (Katalognummer 1777) veröffentlicht. Beide Nummern sind auf dem Album Howlin Wolf enthalten, welches eine Kompilation von sechs Chess-Singles aus dem Jahren 1960 bis 1962 ist.

Allgemeines

In der Kultur des Südens wird als „Back Door Man“ ein Mann bezeichnet, der ein Verhältnis mit einer verheirateten Frau hat und durch die Hintertüre kommt und geht. (When everybody trying to sleep, I’m somewhere making my midnight creep. / Every morning the rooster crow, something tell me I got to go / I am a back door man.)[1] Der „Back Door Man“ ist eine im Blues weit verbreitete Figur, so kommt er bei Charley Patton, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Blind Willie McTell und Sara Martin, einer Bluesängerin aus den 1930er-Jahren vor. In Strange Loving Blues behauptet sie, dass jede sensible Frau einen „Back door man“ habe. Die Phrase stammt aus den 1920er-Jahren, doch erfuhr sie in den 1960er-Jahren eine Bedeutungserweiterung, wobei damit ein „Mann, der Analverkehr betreibt“ gemeint ist.[2]
