Das Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) ist eine in New York ansässige Nichtregierungsorganisation. Sie sammelt weltweit Informationen über die Verletzung der Pressefreiheit und insbesondere über Einschüchterung oder Ermordung von Journalisten. Das CPJ setzt sich ein für Pressefreiheit und das Recht der Journalisten auf repressionsfreie Berichterstattung.

Das Komitee wurde 1981 von US-amerikanischen Auslandskorrespondenten gegründet. In seinem Hauptquartier in New York beschäftigt es 22 Mitarbeiter, drunter Spezialisten für verschiedene Regionen (Afrika, Amerika, Asien, Europa und Zentralasien, Mittlerer Osten und Nordafrika). Es gibt außerdem Vertretungen in Washington, D. C. und Bangkok. Auf seiner Webseite veröffentlicht es aktuell und regelmäßig Nachrichten und Berichte zu Verstößen gegen die Pressefreiheit weltweit. Dazu kommen Sonderpublikationen wie On Assignment. A Guide to Reporting in Dangerous Situations (deutsch etwa: Im Einsatz. Ein Überblick über die Berichterstattung in gefährlichen Situationen). Das CPJ gibt die Halbjahreszeitschrift Dangerous Assignments (deutsch etwa: Gefährliche Einsätze) heraus sowie einen weltweiten Jahresüberblick zum Stand der Pressefreiheit mit dem Titel Attacks on the Press (deutsch etwa: Angriffe auf die Presse).

Das CPJ verleiht jährlich die International Press Freedom Awards. Damit werden Journalisten und Menschenrechtsaktivisten geehrt, die wegen ihrer Arbeit oder des Einsatzes für die Pressefreiheit verfolgt wurden. Im Jahr 2005 gingen die Preise an die Journalisten Lúcio Flávio Pinto (Herausgeber des Jornal Pessoal/Brasilien), Shi Tao (Journalist) (Freier Journalist für Internet-Publikationen und Redakteur des Wirtschaftsblatts Dangdai Shang Bao/VR China) und Galima Bucharbajewa (Korrespondentin des Institute for War & Peace Reporting/Usbekistan) sowie an die Rechtsanwältin Beatrice Mtetwa aus Zimbabwe, die sich auf die Verteidigung von unterdrückten Journalisten in ihrem Land spezialisiert hat.

Zu den Vorsitzenden des CPJ gehören die Journalisten Christiane Amanpour, Tom Brokaw, Anthony Lewis und Dan Rather.
