Abancay ist die Hauptstadt der peruanischen Region Apurímac. Sie hat 53.083 Einwohner (2005) und ist seit 1958 römisch-katholischer Bischofssitz. Die Stadt liegt in einem Seitental des Río Apurímac, am südlichen Fuße des schneebedeckten Gipfels Ampay, auf halbem Weg an der Straße von Nazca nach Cuzco. Eine national bekannte Persönlichkeit ist die Freiheitskämpferin Micaela Bastidas, Ehefrau des José Gabriel Condorcanqui (genannt Tupac Amaru II), die vier Kilometer nördlich der Stadt geboren wurde..
