Die Stadtbrücke über den Avon

Bradford-on-Avon ist eine Stadt im Nordwesten von Wiltshire in England und hat eine Bevölkerung von ca. 10.000 Einwohnern.

Geografie

Die Stadt liegt teils im Vale of Pewsey, teils auf dem Hügel, der das westliche Ende dieses Tals markiert. Bradford liegt wenige Kilometer süd-östlich von Bath, in der hügeligen Landschaft zwischen Mendip Hills, Salisbury Plain und Cotswolds. Durch die Stadt fließt der Avon.

Die Stadt liegt an der Bahnlinie Bath - Weymouth, die in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eröffnet wurde. Der Bahnhof wurde schon einige Jahre vorher fertiggestellt. Die Strecke wurde dann anschließend von der First Great Western Link angelegt. Richtung Norden kommt man an Avoncliff und Freshford vorbei und gelangt auf die Strecke Great Western Main Line. Die Züge fahren meist bis Bahnhof Bristol Temple Meads und oft sogar noch bis Cardiff. Richtung Süden über Trowbridge kreuzt man bei Westbury/Wiltshire die Hauptstrecke Plymouth - London und fährt weiter Richtung Southampton.

Parallel zur Eisenbahnlinie verläuft der Kennet-und-Avon-Kanal, der Anschluss an den Avon bei Bath im Westen und an die Themse bei Reading im Osten bietet.
