Handlung

Patricia zeigt auf einer Polizeiwache in Montreal den Mord an ihrer 17-jährigen Cousine Muriel an. Muriel wurde auf dem Heimweg von einer Party von einem Mann angegriffen, sexuell missbraucht und getötet. Einige Zeit später beschuldigt Patricia ihren eigenen Bruder Andrew, den eine Beziehung mit Muriel verband. Inspektor Carella, der die Ermittlungen leitet, glaubt ihr nicht. Er findet den Täter innerhalb der Familie beider Mädchen.

Kritiken

Das Lexikon des internationalen Films schrieb, der Film sei „geschickt und flüssig inszeniert“ sowie „darstellerisch lebendig und glaubhaft“. Chabrol stelle ein weiteres Mal „die Abgründe hinter der Fassade bürgerlicher Wohlanständigkeit dar“.[1]

Die Zeitschrift Cinema schrieb, der „düstere, rätselvolle Krimi über abgründige Obsessionen“ sei „spannend erzählt“. Er stelle „die gewohnten Sarkasmen Chabrols gegen bürgerliche Lebenslügen“ in den Hintergrund und lege einen „stärkeren Wert auf die Darstellung der Charaktere und ihrer geheimen und unterdrückten Leidenschaften“.[2]

Hintergründe

Der Film wurde in Montreal gedreht, wohin die in New York City spielende Handlung der Romanvorlage verlegt wurde, weil Chabrol meinte, dass New York „hektisch“ sei und eine „intime Charakterdarstellung“ unmöglich mache.[2][3] Die Produktionskosten betrugen schätzungsweise 1,45 Millionen Kanadische Dollar.[4] Die Weltpremiere fand am 1. Februar 1978 in Frankreich statt.[5]
