Yishuv

Mit Jischuw (hebr.: ישוב; „bewohntes Land, Siedlung“) bezeichnet man die jüdische Bevölkerung in Palästina vor der Staatsgründung Israels.

Der Begriff stammt aus der zionistischen Bewegung der 1880er und bezeichnete ursprünglich die Juden, die zwischen der ersten Einwanderungswelle (= erste Aliyah) im Jahr 1882 und dem Unabhängigkeitskrieg im Jahre 1948 in Palästina lebten, wobei der Jischuw am Beginn der großen Einwanderung etwa 25.000 Menschen umfasste und zur Zeit der Staatsgründung schon 700.000.

Aber man findet auch den Begriff „Alter Jischuw“ in Gebrauch für die politisch nicht organisierten Siedler vor 1882. So spricht man inzwischen zur Unterscheidung auch vom „Neuen Jischuw“, der begann, sich zu organisieren und zu politisieren, zu einem Gemeinwesen drängte, 1903 die erste Knesset und 1920 Wahlen zur Delegiertenversammlung ermöglichte. 1928 wurde der Jischuw von der britischen Regierung offiziell anerkannt.
