Die Wahl zum Pressefoto des Jahres erfolgt durch die von der niederländischen Stiftung World Press Photo durchgeführten World Press Photo Awards. Der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Preis gilt als „angesehenste und begehrteste Auszeichnung im Bildjournalismus“ [1].

Neben dem Pressefoto des Jahres vergibt die 13-köpfige Jury je drei weitere Preise in zehn Kategorien (Spot News, allgemeine Nachrichten, Menschen in den Nachrichten, Sport & Action, Sportreportagen, aktuelle Themen, Alltagsleben, Porträts, Kunst und Unterhaltung, Natur), wobei sowohl die besten Einzelbilder als auch Fotoserien ausgezeichnet werden.[2]

Den Hauptpreis erhält das Bild, welches „… nicht nur die fotojournalistische Verkörperung des Jahres darstellt, sondern auch ein Thema, eine Situation oder ein Ereignis von hoher journalistischer Bedeutung darstellt und dies in einer Weise, die ein außergewöhnliches Maß an visuellem Wahrnehmungsvermögen und Kreativität beweist“.[3]
