Die World Music Awards werden jährlich an Musiker aus verschiedenen Musikkategorien verliehen, die die höchsten Plattenverkäufe weltweit für sich verbuchen können.

Inhaltsverzeichnis

Die Veranstaltung wurde 1989 in Monaco ins Leben gerufen und wird gesponsert von Albert von Monaco. Sie fand bis 2003 auch in Monte Carlo statt und wurde auch live in die USA übertragen. Deshalb zog man schließlich aus Rücksicht auf die US-Hauptsendezeit in die USA um, 2004 nach Las Vegas und 2005 nach Los Angeles. Die World Music Awards im November 2006 haben in London stattgefunden.

Wohltätigkeit

Ziel war es auch, die Awards mit einem wohltätigen Zweck zu verbinden. Die Einnahmen aus Sponsoring und Fernsehgeldern fließen alljährlich in die Monaco Aide & Presence Foundation unter dem ehrenamtlichen Vorsitz von Fürst Albert II. Sie wird auch von der monegassischen Regierung finanziell unterstützt.

Seit Beginn der wohltätigen Unterstützung konnten die World Music Awards mit Hilfe der Monaco Aide & Presence Foundation mehrere Schulen, Krankenhäuser und Waisenhäuser bauen. 2006 soll ein Krankenhaus und ein Waisenhaus in Kamerun gebaut werden

Die Awards

Für die Awards ermitteln die einzelnen nationalen Phonoverbände die aktuellen Verkaufszahlen und melden diese an die Zentrale der International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in London. Diese entscheidet daraufhin, wer die begehrten Preise erhält.

Ausgezeichnet werden männliche, weibliche Interpreten und Bands, die im Laufe des Jahres weltweit am meisten Umsätze machten.

Daneben gibt es auch noch Auszeichnungen für national erfolgreichsten Künstler in verschiedenen Ländern mit einem großen Musikmarkt.

Legend Award

Als Sonderauszeichnung wird ein Legend Award an einen international bekannten Musiker (oder auch Produzenten) verliehen, der mit seinem Lebenswerk die Musikindustrie stark beeinflusst hat. Dieser Sonderpreis wurde seit 1989 alle zwei Jahre verliehen und ab 1995 jedes Jahr (mit Ausnahme von 2001 und 2006).

Chopard Diamond Award

Ein weiterer Sonderpreis der World Music Awards ist der Chopard Diamond Award, auch kurz Diamond Award genannt, der seit 2001 in unregelmäßigen Abständen verliehen wird. Wer diesen Preis bekommt, hat in seiner gesamten Karriere mindestens 100 Millionen Alben verkauft.

Deutsche Preisträger

Es existiert auch die Kategorie „Bester Künstler Deutschlands“ bei den World Music Awards. Der Gewinner ist der deutsche Künstler, der im jeweiligen Jahr die meisten Tonträger verkauft hat.
