Wheat Belt

Der Wheat Belt (dt. Weizengürtel) ist ein Anbaugebiet von Weizen in den USA. Er umfasst heute im Wesentlichen die Bundesstaaten der Great Plains, im Süden beginnend in Texas, im Norden bis in die Prärieprovinzen Kanadas hineinreichend.

Im Norden ist der Sommerweizenanbau geblieben, während im Süden die Hirseart Sorghum dazukommt, die nach dem Winterweizen noch im gleichen Jahr angebaut wird. Die Sprinklerbewässerung auf kreisrunden Flächen breitet sich immer weiter aus, wodurch zusätzliche Ernten erzielt werden können. Daneben besteht auch noch der Trockenfeldanbau (dry farming), der allerdings aufgrund der sich ostwärts verlagernden Trockengrenze (< 500 mm Jahresniederschlag) im Lauf des 20. Jahrhunderts immer weiter zurückgedrängt wurde.

Durch den Futtermittelanbau ist eine gute Grundlage für Großbetriebe der Rindermast entstanden (feedlots).
