Visual Effects

Als visuelle Effekte bzw. englisch visual effects (VFX) werden Effekte in Filmen bezeichnet, die in der Postproduktion erzeugt werden, heutzutage meist digital mit Computern - im Gegensatz zu Spezialeffekten (SFX), die vor Ort am Set gedreht werden.

VFX Supervisor und VFX Producer sind verantwortlich für die Planung und Realisierung visueller Effekte und leiten die VFX-Abteilung einer Filmproduktion.

In der Kategorie Visuelle Effekte wird jährlich ein Oscar der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences verliehen.

Zweck

Visuelle Effekte werden eingesetzt, um Filmmaterial aufzubessern oder um bestimmte Effekte zu erzielen, die mit einer unbearbeiteten Filmaufnahme nicht oder nur sehr umständlich zu erreichen wären. VFX im Film müssen real wirken, um dem Zuschauer die Illusion der Handlung glaubhaft zu machen. Gut gemachte Effekte sollten als solche vom Zuschauer nicht erkennbar sein.

VFX wird häufig zur Kostenersparnis eingesetzt. Visuelle Effekte können aber dennoch beträchtliche Summen kosten. Es rentiert sich aber meist deshalb, da das Bauen eines Filmsets z. B. einer kompletten mittelalterlichen Stadt noch teurer werden würde. Die gleiche Stadt kann für einen Bruchteil der Kosten digital mit Hilfe von VFX am Computer "gebaut" werden. Es werden oft mehrere Ebenen kombiniert wie z. B. die Darsteller in einem teilweise gebauten Set und digital ergänzten Teilen. Vor allem in Historienfilmen, Science-Fiction-Filmen, Katastrofenfilmen und Fantasyfilmen werden VFX eingesetzt.

Zu VFX können folgende Bereiche gezählt werden:

Technik

Bevor Computer für visuelle Effekte genutzt wurden, erzeugte man sie meistens durch optische Prozesse, z. B. Rückprojektion, Doppelbelichtung oder das Durchbelichten von mehreren aufeinandergelegten Film- und Maskenlayern.

Heute sind an VFX oft 3D-Programme beteiligt, deren Handhabung eine große Erfahrung benötigt. Bekannte 3D-Programme sind z. B. Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage XSI, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Blender, Sidefx Houdini und Realsoft 3D.

Die Arbeiten teilen sich oft auf mehrere Arbeitsschritte auf:

  • Preproduction
    • Concept Design
    • Erstellung von Storyboards und Festlegung der Sets, Kameraeinstellungen, Beleuchtung
    • Prävisualisierung (Previz) - Umsetzen der Storyboards in einen groben Film
  • Production
    • Modelling (Das Erstellen eines 3D Modells)
    • Animation
    • Shader Writing (Die Bestimmung der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit durch Regeln, wie das Licht auf ihr reagiert)
    • Texturing (Die "Bemalung" der Oberfläche)
    • Lighting – Das Setzen von virtuellen Lichtquellen
    • Rendering
  • Postproduction

Zur Integration und Kombination der Bilder und Effekte (z. B. real gedrehtes Material und gerenderte 3D-Elemente) kommt sogenannte Compositing-Software zum Einsatz. Bekannte Pakete sind u. a. die Produkt-Reihe von discreet (inferno, flame, fire, smoke, combustion) oder Quantel (iQ, eQ, Henry, Editbox), Adobe After Effects, Shake, D2 Nuke und Digital Fusion. Diese bieten ähnlich wie Bildbearbeitungsprogramme Möglichkeiten zur 2D- und 3D-Bildmanipulation und -animation.

Teilweise werden für visuelle Effekte auch sog. Matte Paintings als Hintergründe verwendet.
