Vijaya

Vijaya (* 543 v. Chr.; † 504 v. Chr.[1]) war der mythische Stammesvater der Singhalesen und der erste König Sri Lankas. Er soll im 6. Jh. v. Chr. mit seinem Gefolge aus dem Königreich Vanga im Nordosten Indiens nach Sri Lanka ausgewandert sein.

Die Chronik Mahavamsa, aus der sich seine Lebenszeit von ca. 543 v. Chr. bis 504 v. Chr. ergibt, stellt die Hauptinformationsquelle über sein Leben dar. Vijaya und seine Erlebnisse mit der Halbgöttin (yakkhinī) Kuvenī hat schon G. Turnour (1837) mit der Geschichte von Odysseus und Kirke verglichen.[2] Der Mahavamsa gibt keine gesicherten Informationen über Vijaya, der als historische Persönlichkeit vielleicht nie existiert hat. Allerdings stützen archäologische Funde die entsprechende Datierung der arischen Einwanderung nach Sri Lanka.
