Urquhart Castle ist eine am Loch Ness gelegene Burgruine. Der nächstgelegene Ort ist das etwa 2,7 km entfernte Drumnadrochit.

Geschichte

Etwa 1230 erbaut, zählte die Burg zu den größten in Schottland. 1296 wurde sie von den Engländern eingenommen, fiel dann aber unter die Kontrolle von Robert the Bruce, nachdem dieser schottischer König wurde. Die letzte Garnison verließ die Burg 1692, die fortan dem Verfall überlassen wurde. In den 1930er Jahren erwarb ein Mr. Chewett die Ruine. Heute gehört sie Historic Scotland und kann besichtigt werden.

Urquhart Castle ist ein beliebter Aussichtspunkt über Loch Ness und für Nessie-Beobachter. Sie ist auf verschiedenen sogenannten Nessie-Bildern zu sehen. Sie ist eine der ältesten Ruinen in ganz Schottland.
