Die James Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame ist die bekannteste Ruhmeshalle des Basketballs. In ihr werden außergewöhnliche Spieler, Trainer, Schiedsrichter und Förderer des Sports aufgenommen. Auch einige wenige Mannschaften wurden bislang aufgenommen. Derzeit sind es 295 Einzelpersonen und acht Mannschaften[1]. Die Aufnahme erfolgt bei Spielern frühestens im sechsten Jahr nach Beendigung der aktiven Karriere, bei Trainern und Schiedsrichtern alternativ auch nach 25 Jahren Berufsausübung.

Die Hall of Fame liegt in Springfield, Massachusetts. Sie wurde 1959 eingeweiht und nach dem kanadischen Arzt und Pädagogen James Naismith benannt, der als Erfinder des Basketballs gilt.

Organisation

Vorstand

Die Leitung der Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame obliegt einem Vorstand von derzeit 22 Mitgliedern. Vorsitzender des Vorstandes ist Jerry Colangelo, der frühere Besitzer der Phoenix Suns und anderer Profiteams in US-Sportligen. Einziger aktiver Spieler unter den Vorstandsmitgliedern ist Grant Hill.

Aufgabe des Vorstandes ist es, öffentliches Bewusstsein für den Sport Basketball und dessen Geschichte zu schaffen. Auf der Verwaltungsebene überwacht der Vorstand das operative Geschäft der Hall of Fame sowie den Auswahlprozess zukünftiger Mitglieder. Der Auswahlprozess selbst wird jedoch durch eine Reihe von Nominierungskomitees gesteuert.

Nominierungskomitees

Insgesamt sechs verschiedene Nominierungskomitees werden vom Vorstand des Hall of Fame einberufen, um jedes Jahr eine Auswahl von Kandidaten zu treffen, die anschließend dem so genannten Ehrenkomitee der Hall of Fame zur endgültigen Entscheidung präsentiert werden. Die Mitglieder aller dieser Komitees werden von der Hall of Fame nicht bekannt gegeben. Sämtliche dieser Gremien arbeiten traditionell anonym.[2]
