Die Underground Railroad (Untergrundbahn) war ein aus Gegnern der Sklaverei – auch Weißen – bestehendes informelles Netzwerk, das Sklaven auf der Flucht aus den Südstaaten Amerikas nach Norden, z. B. in das sichere Kanada, Unterstützung gewährte. Mit geheimen Routen, Schutzhäusern, Fluchthelfern und geheimer Kommunikation gelang es ihnen, zwischen 1810 und 1850 etwa 100.000 Sklaven zu befreien. Die 1780 gegründete Underground Railroad bestand bis 1862.

Nachdem die Sklaven beispielsweise mittels gesanglicher Botschaften Zeit und Ort der Flucht erfahren hatten, wurden sie von Fluchthelfern, die sich als Sklaven ausgaben, vom Gelände der Sklavenbesitzer gebracht. Anschließend fanden sie bei verschiedenen Stationen der Underground Railroad Schutz. Es waren unter anderem alte Bahnhöfe, Scheunen und Häuser von Mitgliedern der Underground Railroad. Nachdem die Flüchtlinge außer Reichweite der vormaligen Besitzer bzw. der Kopfgeldjäger waren, wurden sie mit Hilfe von Spendengeldern neu gekleidet, so dass sie beim späteren Gebrauch von Zügen und Schiffen nicht auffielen.

Eines der bekanntesten und bedeutendsten Mitglieder der Underground Railroad war Harriet Tubman. Mit 29 Jahren floh sie selbst aus der Sklaverei, danach kehrte sie noch 19 mal zurück, um anderen bei der Flucht zu helfen. Dabei benutzte sie den Codenamen „Moses“ und war eine der wenigen, die das Risiko, entdeckt zu werden und zu ihrem früheren Besitzer zurück zu kommen, auf sich nahm. Sie soll zwischen 1815 und 1825 geboren worden sein und starb am 10. März 1913. Sie arbeitete eng unter anderem mit dem Quäker Thomas Garrett zusammen.
