UNKLE

James Lavelle (* 1974 in Oxford, Vereinigtes Königreich) ist ein englischer Musiker, DJ, Produzent und Veranstalter. Er ist der Gründer und Besitzer vom Musiklabel Mo'Wax. Selbstkomponierte Songs veröffentlicht er unter dem Projekt UNKLE (oder auch U.N.K.L.E.), die musikalisch unter Triphop, Hiphop, Break Beat und Drum'n'Bass fallen.

Lavelle mit DJ Shadow

Der Projektname UNKLE wurde von Lavelle das erste mal 1994 für die Hiphop-Single „This Time Has Come EP“ verwendet. Ab dann arbeitete er unter der gleichen Bezeichnung zusammen mit dem Kollegen DJ Shadow, obwohl das Projekt in den Medien meist synonym für James Lavelle verwendet wird. Nach langer Vorleistung erscheint 1998 „Psyence Fiction“, ihr erstes Album, das mit verschiedenen Gastvokalisten aufgenommen wurde. Darunter Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Mike D (Beastie Boys) und Badly Drawn Boy. DJ Shadow verließ das Projekt. Für Live-Konzerte rekrutierte Lavelle drei Studenten für Bass, Gitarre und Schlagzeug, die schließlich die Band South formierten.

Lavelle mit Richard File

Seit 2002 arbeitet nun Richard File mit für UNKLE und sie nehmen das 2003er Album „Never, Never, Land“ auf. Dieses Album enthält unter anderem Triphop- und Elektropop-Kollaborationen mit Ian Brown (Stone Roses), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Joel Cadbury (South) und Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack).

Richard File ist mittlerweile fester Bestandteil des eigentlichen Soloprojekts von James Lavelle. Für das 2007 erschienene dritte Album wurden Songs mit Ian Astbury (The Cult), Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack) und Brody Dalle (The Distillers) aufgenommen. Das Album trägt den Titel War Stories und erschien Mitte Juli 2007.

James Lavelle

Neben seinen Tätigkeiten für das UNKLE-Projekt betätigt sich James Lavelle auch mit Remixen, bei denen er meist die gepunktete Schreibweise von U.N.K.L.E. oder seinen eigenen Namen verwendet.

Der Titel „Hold my Hand“ von UNKLE kommt im Soundtrack des US-amerikanischen Filmdramas 21 vor. Ebenso trug Lavelle den Titel „Broken“zum Soundtrack des zweiten Akte X Films Jenseits der Wahrheit bei.
