Transcoding

Transkodierung ist das Umwandeln eines Medienobjekts in ein anderes Format. So wird dabei eine Datei mit Video- oder Audioinformationen beispielsweise vom Quellformat MPEG-2 ins Zielformat MPEG-4 (Videokompression) oder von WAV nach MP3 oder WMA (Audiodatenkompression) umgewandelt. Die Transkodierung eines Medienobjekts ist in der Regel verlustbehaftet. D.h. das Medienobjekt verliert, insbesondere bei der Umwandlung von oben genannten ihrerseits bereits verlustbehafteten Endformaten, an Qualität.

Achtung: Den Begriff Rekodierung dagegen verwendet man, wenn Quell- und Zielformat identisch sind und nur Eigenschaften des Medienobjekts verändert werden. So wird also hier beispielsweise der Inhalt einer Video-DVD (etwa MPEG-2) in Auflösung und Bildwiederholrate nur verkleinert, um Speicherplatz zu sparen. Das Format des Medienobjekts bleibt dabei identisch.
