Das Tournaisium (im deutschen Sprachgebrauch meist verkürzt zu Tournai) ist in der Erdgeschichte die unterste chronostratigraphische Stufe des Mississippiums (Karbon). Die Stufe umfasst geochronologisch den Zeitraum von etwa 359,2 Millionen bis etwa 345,3 Millionen Jahren. Die Stufe folgt auf das Famennium (Devon) und wird vom Viséum abgelöst.

Namensgebung und Geschichte

Die Stufe ist nach der Stadt Tournai (Doornik) in Belgien benannt. Stufe und Name wurden von André Dumont 1832 in die wissenschaftliche Literatur eingeführt.

Definition und GSSP

Die Basis der Stufe ist durch das Erstauftreten der Conodonten-Art Siphonodella sulcata innerhalb der Entwicklungslinie von Siphonodella praesulcata zu Siphonodella sulcata definiert. Die obere Grenze der Stufe wird durch das Erstauftreten der Fusulinen-Art Eoparastaffella simplex (Morphotype 1/Morphotype 2) markiert. Das offizielle Referenzprofil der Internationalen Kommission für Stratigraphie ("Global Stratotype Section and Point" = GSSP) für das Tournaisium ist das La Serre-Profil in der südöstlichen Montagne Noire (Frankreich). Es handelt sich um einen etwa 80 cm tiefen Schurf am Südabhang des Berges La Serre, ungefähr 125 m südlich des Gipfels (252 m), ungefähr 525 m östlich der Maison La Roquette, 2,5 km nordöstlich der Ortschaft Fontès (Dépt. Hérault, Cabrières, Frankreich).
