The Village Voice ist eine New Yorker Wochenzeitung, die investigative Artikel, Analysen aktueller politischer Entwicklungen und Kultur-, Kunstkritiken sowie Veranstaltungshinweise für New York City veröffentlicht. Sie war die erste und ist wohl noch immer die bekannteste der als alternative weeklies bezeichneten Publikationen.

Die Voice wurde im Herbst 1955 von Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher und Norman Mailer gegründet. Sie hat bahnbrechenden investigativen Journalismus zu der Stadtpolitik von New York City publiziert und berichtet über lokale wie nationale Politik sowie über die Künste, Kultur, Musik, Tanz, Film und Theater. Eine einflussreiche Musikliste, bekannt als "Pazz & Jop" wird jedes Jahr aus den "top ten" von Musikkritikern des ganzen Landes erstellt.

Für die Voice haben viele bekannte Schriftsteller geschrieben, unter anderen Ezra Pound, Henry Miller, Katherine Anne Porter, James Baldwin, e. e. cummings, Nat Hentoff, Ted Hoagland, Tom Stoppard, Lorraine Hansberry, Jerry Tallmer, Allen Ginsberg, Murray Kempton, I.F. Stone, Pete Hamill, Michael Musto und Roger Wilkins.

Zu den früheren Herausgebern zählen Dan Wolf, Clay Felker, Tom Morgan, Marianne Partridge, David Schneiderman, Robert Friedman, Marty Gottlieb, Jonathan Larsen, und Karen Durbin.

Zu den Wettbewerbern der Voice in New York City zählen New York Press, New York Observer, und Time Out New York. Nachdem man jahrzehntelang für die Voice bezahlen musste, hat der Wettbewerbsdruck der kostenlosen New York Press dazu geführt, dass die Voice seit den späten 1990er Jahren auch kostenlos ist. Ihre Auflage lag im Juni 2010 bei 189.462.[1]

Die Village Voice wird politisch der Linken zugerechnet.

Einige Zeitungen in den USA gehören der Voice: City Pages (Minneapolis-St. Paul), L.A. Weekly, Nashville Scene, OC Weekly, und Seattle Weekly.
