The Temptations sind eine amerikanische Musikgruppe.

Gegründet wurden die Temptations 1960 in Detroit (Michigan) als Vokalquintett. Im Laufe der 1960er Jahre wurde die Gruppe eine erfolgreiche Soulformation.

Zu den Gründungsmitgliedern gehörten:

  • Otis Williams (eigentl. Otis Miles) (Tenor), (* 30. Oktober 1939 in Texarkana, Texas (1960 bis heute)
  • Elbridge "Al" Bryant (Tenor), (* 28. September 1939, † 26. Oktober 1975) (1960 - 1963)
  • Eddie Kendricks (Leadtenor/Falsett), (* 17. Dezember 1939, † 5. Oktober 1992) (1960 - 1971 und 1982)
  • Melvin Franklin (eigentl. David English) (Bass), * 12. Oktober 1942, † 23. Februar 1994) (1960 - 1994)

Ende 1963 wurde Elbridge Bryant aus der Gruppe geworfen und durch David Ruffin ersetzt. Unter dem Produzenten Smokey Robinson gelangen den Temptations die ersten Hits (My Girl, 1965, You’re My Everything, 1967). 1968 kam für Ruffin Dennis Edwards, und der Produzent Norman Whitfield veränderte zeitgemäß den Sound vom eingängigen Black-Pop zur Mischung aus psychedelisch geprägtem Soul-Rock mit Funkelementen und sozialkritisch inspirierten Texten. Mit I Can’t Get Next To You (1970), Just My Imagination (1971) und Papa Was a Rollin' Stone (1972) landeten die Temptations viel beachtete Hits und erreichten den Gipfel ihrer Popularität.

Paul Williams nahm sich 1973 das Leben. In der Folgezeit löste sich die Band langsam auf. Eddie Kendricks gelangen noch einige bescheidene Soloerfolge. Nach mehreren Wiedervereinigungen führte zunächst Dennis Edwards die Temptations seit den 1980er Jahren als Showband weiter.

Das Gründungsmitglied Otis Williams hat zusammen mit Patricia Romanowski im Jahre 1988 die Story der Temptations verfasst und als Buch herausgegeben.

1999 wurden die Temptations in die Vocal Group Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

Die Gruppe unter Leitung von Otis Williams in der Besetzung mit Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Walter 'Joe' Herndon und Bruce Williamson gab noch Ende 2007 im Rahmen einer Europatournee sechs Konzerte in Deutschland, bei denen sie gemeinsam mit den Four Tops auftrat.
