The Encyclopaedia of Islam

Die Encyclopaedia of Islam ist ein anerkanntes Nachschlagewerk für die Islamwissenschaft und gehört zusammen mit der Encyclopædia Iranica und jüngst auch der Encyclopaedia Aethiopica,[1] zur aussagekräftigsten Fachliteratur der Orientalistik.

Die einzelnen Artikel sind von namhaften Islamwissenschaftlern aus verschiedenen Ländern geschrieben und mit Namen gezeichnet. Sie stellen den gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung dar. Die Encyclopaedia of Islam ist das umfassende Standardwerk zu allen Fragen der islamischen Religion und Kultur sowie der arabischen Literatur der islamischen Welt.

Die Encyclopaedia of Islam ist bereits in zweiter Auflage erschienen. Die erste Auflage in vier Bänden, kurz auch EI1, aus den Jahren 1913 bis 1938 erschien noch in den drei Sprachen Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch (Enzyklopaedie des Islam). Beim 21. Internationalen Orientalistenkongress in Paris im Juli 1948 wurde die Lancierung einer neuen Ausgabe beschlossen, die nur noch in Englisch und Französisch erscheinen sollte. Der erste Band der zweiten Ausgabe, kurz EI2, wurde 1960 herausgegeben, der letzte Band – Nr. 12 mit Ergänzungen – erschien 2007.

Eine dritte Auflage, die nur noch auf Englisch erscheint, ist in Vorbereitung und für Abonnenten sukzessive bei Brill online zugänglich.
