Apostel! (The Apostle) ist ein US-amerikanisches Filmdrama aus dem Jahr 1997. Regie führte Robert Duvall, der auch das Drehbuch schrieb, den Film produzierte und die Hauptrolle übernahm.

Handlung

Der verheiratete Prediger Euliss Dewey lebt in Texas. Seine Ehefrau Jessie hat eine Affäre mit Horace, den Euliss im Affekt verletzt, wonach Horace im komatösen Zustand verbleibt.

Dewey verlässt die Stadt und zieht nach Louisiana, wo er den Namen Apostel E.F. verwendet. Er arbeitet zunächst als Techniker bei einem Radiosender, wo ihm der Senderbesitzer erlaubt, eine Predigt zu halten. Daraufhin macht Apostel E.F. Karriere als ein in den Medien auftretender Prediger. Seine Frau hört eine seiner Predigten und benachrichtigt die Polizei. Die Polizisten warten das Ende einer Predigt ab und verhaften Dewey, der während des Abspanns als auch hier predigender Häftling gezeigt wird.

Kritiken

Das Lexikon des internationalen Films schrieb, der Film sei eine „außergewöhnliche Charakterstudie, die sich der Hauptdarsteller und Regisseur Robert Duvall auf den Leib geschrieben hat“. Seine nur scheinbar dokumentarische „Qualitäten mehr eine charismatische Religiosität beleuchten als kritisch untersuchen“. Seine Atmosphäre sei „beschreibend“ und „primär nicht kommentierend“; sie vermittle „aufschlußreiche Einblicke in eine Welt amerikanischer Frömmigkeit, in der Elemente wie Unterhaltung und Bewegung zentrale Bedeutung gewinnen“.[1]

Die Zeitschrift Cinema schrieb, Robert Duvall überzeuge als „charismatischer Prediger“. Er war „nie besser als in diesem Drama“. Als Regisseur mache Duvall „die Atmosphäre in der drückend heißen, frisch renovierten kleinen Kirche durch lange Einstellungen erfahrbar“ und vermeide „dramatische Schnitte“. Die Handlung sei jedoch vorhersehbar.[2]

Auszeichnungen

Robert Duvall wurde im Jahr 1998 als Bester Hauptdarsteller für den Oscar nominiert. Er gewann 1998 für seine Rolle den Golden Satellite Award, den Chicago Film Critics Association Award, den Florida Film Critics Circle Award, den Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award, den Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, den National Society of Film Critics Award und den Society of Texas Film Critics Award; außerdem wurde er für den Screen Actors Guild Award nominiert.

Robert Duvall als Regisseur und Darsteller sowie Rob Carliner gewannen im Jahr 1998 den Independent Spirit Award. Robert Duvall als Drehbuchautor, Farrah Fawcett und Miranda Richardson wurden für den gleichen Preis nominiert.

Hintergründe

Der Film wurde in Dallas und in den anderen Orten in Texas sowie in Lafayette (Louisiana) gedreht.[3] Seine Produktionskosten betrugen schätzungsweise 5 Millionen US-Dollar. Der Film hatte seine Weltpremiere am 6. September 1997 auf dem Toronto International Film Festival, danach wurde er auf einigen anderen Filmfestivals vorgeführt. Er spielte in den Kinos der USA ca. 20,7 Millionen US-Dollar ein.[4][5]
