Tewkesbury ist eine Stadt in Gloucestershire, England. Sie liegt am Zusammenfluss des Severn und des Avon und gibt dem Tewkesbury Borough den Namen. Der Name des Ortes rührt von Theoc, einem Angelsachsen, her, der hier im 7. Jahrhundert eine Einsiedelei gründete, die Theocsbury genannt wurde.

Nach der Volkszählung von 2001 hatte Tewkesbury 10.016 Einwohner. Stadtteile von Tewkesbury sind Northway, Newtown, Mitton, Priors Park, Walton Cardiff, Wheatpieces, Ashchurch

Geschichte

Einige Jahre nach der normannischen Eroberung Englands wurde in Tewkesbury eine Abtei gegründet; die Bauarbeiten begannen im Jahr 1090, die Tewkesbury Abbey wurde am 23. Oktober 1121 geweiht. Es gibt aber auch Spuren einer Kirche und einer Siedlung, die bereits vor der Abtei bestanden.

Am 4. Mai 1471 fand in der Umgebung die Schlacht von Tewkesbury statt, in der im Rahmen der Rosenkriege die Armee Eduards IV. das Haus Lancaster schlug.
