Die Tanpura, auch Tambura, gehört zu der Familie der Langhalslauten und ist ein Saiteninstrument der indischen Musik.

Sie wird als Borduninstrument verwendet und erzeugt einen obertonreichen Klang. Meistens ist sie aus dem harten Holz des Brotfruchtbaumes geschnitzt. Die Tanpura hat meistens vier oder fünf Metallsaiten. Diese sind auf einen Grundton und dessen Quinte und Oktave gestimmt und werden ungegriffen gezupft.

Formen

Bei der Tanpura wird zwischen drei Formen unterschieden:

Instrumental Tanpura

Flach gebaut und meist mit fünf dünnen Saiten bespannt hat sie einen hellen Klang und wird zur Begleitung von Melodieinstrumenten wie z.B. Sitars gespielt. Die Länge beträgt meist 95 bis 115 cm. Die Stimmung des Grundtons liegt beim C.

Female Tanpura

Die Female Tanpura ist mittelgroß und mit vier Saiten bespannt bei denen der Grundton meistens auf G gestimmt wird. Die Länge beträgt 120 bis 130 cm. Sie hat einem bauchigem Kürbiskorpus und wird zur Begleitung von Sängerinnen gespielt.

Male Tanpura

Mit einer Länge von 140 bis 150 cm ist sie besonders groß. Sie ist mit dicken Saiten bespannt, bei denen der Grundton meistens auf C gestimmt wird. Mit ihrem vollen Klang wird sie traditionell zur Begleitung von Sängern gespielt.

Heute wird oft, auch von professionellen Musikern, die Tanpura durch eine elektronische Shruti-Box ersetzt.
