Mit dem englischen Begriff Stand-Alone (deutsch: alleine stehend) bezeichnet man Geräte, Hardware oder Software, die eigenständig, ohne weitere Zusatzgeräte, ihre Funktion erfüllen können. Sie sind ein Ergebnis von modularer Konstruktion

Geräte

Häufig trifft man auf diesen Begriff in Verbindung mit Wiedergabegeräten der Unterhaltungselektronik. Bei Hifi-Anlagen unterscheidet ma das Tower-Prinzip aus Stand-alone-Geräten, und die Kompaktanlage. Bei DVD-Spielern trennt man dadurch beispielsweise den Gebrauch in Verbindung mit Computern (DVD-Laufwerk) und das Gerät für den Anschluss an den Fernseher, wobei jenes grundsätzlich auch ohne Ausgabegerät funktionsfähig ist.

Software

Im Bereich der Software wird als Stand-alone ein Programm bezeichnet, die unabhängig von externen Programmbibliotheken funktioniert und somit überall eingesetzt werden kann, oder bei denen der Interpreter der Programmiersprache mitkompiliert ist, sodass eine ausführbare Datei entsteht.

Weiterhin findet man diesen Begriff häufig in Verbindung von Spielen, die nach ihrem Namen ein Add-on seien könnten, aber auch allein spielbar sind. So stellt zum Beispiel Dawn of War: Dark Crusade sowohl ein Add-on als auch eine eigenständig laufende Software dar. Das gleiche gilt für Guild Wars und diverse andere Spiele.
