Stalwarts

Die Stalwarts (engl. Feste, Starke, Mutige) waren eine Gruppe konservativer US-amerikanischer Republikaner, die im späten 19. Jahrhundert die Politik der USA beeinflusste.

Bekannte Mitglieder dieser Fraktion der Republikanischen Partei waren Roscoe Conkling, Thomas C. Platt, Angus Cameron und Chester A. Arthur. Die Gruppe stand den reformerischen Half-Breeds entgegen; die einzigen objektiven Gegensätze bestanden allerdings weniger in inhaltlichen Fragen als im Ausnutzen von Seilschaften (patronage system). Chester A. Arthur war Vizepräsident unter James A. Garfield und wurde anschließend Präsident der USA. In diesem Amt folgte er allerdings Garfields Reformansätzen, die er als ein Vermächtnis ansah.
