San Pawl il-Baħar (oder engl.: St. Paul's Bay) ist eine Kleinstadt im Nordwesten der Insel Malta mit ca. 2.500 Einwohnern. Sie besteht aus den Ortsteilen Qawra im Nordosten zur Salina Bay hin und dem größeren Buġibba im Südwesten an der St. Paul's Bay. Das Kap Qawra Point trennt die beiden Buchten und Ortsteile.

Wirtschaft und Bedeutung

Die Haupteinnahmequelle der Stadt St. Paul's Bay ist heute der Tourismus. Neben den ausländischen Touristen mieten auch viele Malteser für den Sommer dort Ferienwohnungen.

Die strategische Lage entlang der Route von Valletta zu den Inseln Gozo und Comino machen St. Paul's Bay nach wie vor zu einem Umschlagsplatz für die Güter umliegender Ländereien des Nordwesten Maltas.

Geschichte

Während der römischen und byzantinischen Besatzung Maltas (ca. 210 v. Chr. bis 870 n. Chr.) lebten in der Region um St. Paul's Bay hauptsächlich Bauern und Fischer. Als Behausungen dienten überwiegend natürliche Höhlen. In Zeiten der arabischen Besatzung (870 - 1127 n. Chr.) wurde die Region St. Paul's Bay von den Einwohnern verlassen.

Die britische Machtergreifung in Malta um 1800 führte zu einer nachhaltigen Neubesiedelung St. Paul's Bay.
