Die Grüne Minze, auch Ährige Minze oder Speer-Minze (Mentha spicata) gehört zur Familie der Lippenblütengewächse (Lamiaceae).

Beschreibung

Die Sprossachsen der ausdauernden Pflanzen sind aufrecht, 30 bis 80 Zentimeter groß, kahl, grün bis rötlich, die grünen Blätter sind eiförmig bis lanzettlich, annähernd kahl und fast ungestielt. Der Blattgrund ist herzförmig, der Blattrand gesägt. Die langen, ährenartigen Blütenstände sind endständig, ihre Blüten lila bis violett.

Der Kelch ist gleichmäßig gezähnt, die Oberlippe ist einfach und annähernd flach, die Unterlippe ist dreigelappt, die einzelnen Lappen von fast gleicher Gestalt und Größe. Die vier Staubblätter ragen aus der Krone heraus und sind von gleicher Länge.

Verbreitung

Die ausdauernde, krautige Pflanze war ursprünglich nur in Frankreich, Norditalien und Dalmatien beheimatet. Von dort aus wurde sie durch den Menschen als Kulturpflanze verbreitet und ist aus dieser wiederum verwildert. Die eigentliche Art ist äußerst selten, meist finden sich nur Sorten.

In Deutschland findet sich Grüne Minze als Neophyt und besiedelt nährstoffreiche Stauden- und Unkrautfluren.

Systematik

Die Grüne Minze ist eine oktoploide Art und möglicherweise aus einer Hybridisierung von Mentha longifolia und Mentha suaveolens entstanden. Sie ist eine der Stammarten der Pfeffer-Minze (Mentha x piperita). Synonyme für Mentha spicata sind Mentha viridis und Mentha crispa.[1]

Verwendung

Die Grüne Minze ist als Spearmint eine der bekanntesten Minz-Arten überhaupt und ist Grundlage für zahlreiche industrielle Produkte.
