Southern Oscillation

Als Southern Oscillation beschreibt Gilbert Walker den Luftmassenaustausch zwischen dem Indischen Ozean und dem Pazifik.

Der Ostpazifik ist gegenüber dem Indischen Ozean relativ kalt. Aus subantarktischen Regionen gelangt hier kaltes Tiefenwasser über den Humboldtstrom entlang der Westküste Südamerikas bis zum Äquator. Darüber bildet sich, aufgrund der energiearmen Umgebung, ein Hochdruckgebiet aus. Der Indik ist am Äquator relativ warm und bietet so mehr Potential für Kondensation zur Ausbildung eines Tiefdruckgebiets. Entlang des Äquators findet ein Luftmassenaustausch vom Ostpazifik zum Indik statt.

Ein statistisches Maß für die Stabilität dieser Zirkulation ist der Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Jahre mit einem niedrigen SOI werden El Nino, Jahre mit einem hohen SOI La Nina genannt. [1]

Neuere Forschungen gehen von einem gekoppelten Ozean-Atmosphäre-System (ENSO) aus.
