Sonsorol ist ein administrativer Staat (eine Verwaltungseinheit) von Palau. Das aus vier Inseln bestehende Gebiet hat eine Landfläche von nur 3,30 km² und insgesamt 100 Einwohner[1] (Stand: 2005). Es liegt knapp 350 km südwestlich von Palaus Hauptstadt Melekeok.

Hauptort ist Dongosaru auf der gleichnamigen Insel Dongosaru. Die Sprachen der Bevölkerung sind Sonsorol, Palauisch und Englisch. Die Inseln, die zu Sonsorol gehören, bilden mit weiteren 200 km südlich liegenden Inseln des Staates Hatohobei eine Gruppe, die übersetzt so viel wie „Südwestinseln von Palau“ bedeutet. Die vier Inseln bilden laut Verfassung[2] gleichzeitig die vier Gemeinden der Insel. Die offiziellen Namen der Gemeinden sind: Fanna, Dongosaro, Puro und Melieli. Obwohl Fanna als offizielle Gemeinde mit einem "Chief Mariano W. Carlos"[3] existieren soll, gibt es keine Quellen über eine Besiedlung der Insel.
