Solomon

Solomon Cutner, bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen Solomon, CBE (* 9. August 1902 in London; † 2. Februar 1988 ebenda) war ein britischer Pianist.

Solomon war nie einer der Großen in der Pianistenszene und geriet schon zu Lebzeiten in Vergessenheit, weil er aufgrund eines Schlaganfalls in den letzten mehr als 30 Jahren seines Lebens nicht mehr auftreten konnte. Als Sohn eines Vaters polnischer Abstammung, zur Welt gekommen in sehr einfachen Verhältnissen, wurde er sehr früh (1908) von Mathilde Verne, einer Schülerin von Clara Schumann, „entdeckt“ und als „Wunderkind“ groß herausgebracht.

Im Alter von 7 Jahren spielte er die Klavierfassung von Tschaikovskys Ouvertüre 1812. 1911 kündigte Mathilde Verne ihn als „Solomon - aged 8 years“ an und gab ihm so seinen Künstlernamen. Schon 1917 wollte der von der frühen Karriere überforderte Künstler, der sich 1915 von Mathilde Verne als Promotorin getrennt hatte, seine Laufbahn aufgeben und gab ein Abschiedskonzert; 1919 erlitt er einen Nervenzusammenbruch, von dem er sich nur langsam erholte. Erst 1921 (u. a. nach Studien bei Lazare Lévy ) hatte er sein Comeback in Paris. Dann folgte Erfolg auf Erfolg bis zu einem Schlaganfall 1956, der seine Karriere beendete.

1946 wurde Solomon zum Commander of the Order of the British Empire ernannt.

Unter anderem Joachim Kaiser ist es zu verdanken, dass Solomon im Deutschsprachigen Raum als der wohl lyrischste und zugleich präziseste Interpret von Beethovens Klaviersonaten in Erinnerung bleibt.
