Soliloquy (Drama)

Soliloquy (lat. loqui = sprechen; solus = allein) ist ein Spezialfall des Monologs in dramatischen Texten und Aufführungen. Während der Monolog durch das strukturelle Kriterium der Länge geprägt ist, befindet sich während einer Soliloquy der Sprecher allein auf der Bühne.

Die Soliloquy erfüllt mehrere dramatische Funktionen. Sie gewährt Einblick in das Bewusstsein der Figur, hat größeren Verbindlichkeitscharakter aufgrund fehlender Verstellungen und kann Isolierung und Ausgrenzung von Figuren glaubhaft machen.

Als Theaterkonvention kann sie das Fehlen eines vermittelnden Kommunikationssystems (Epik) kompensieren und in komplexen Handlungsgefügen durch Kommentare Klärung herbeiführen.

Formal und strukturell kann sie unverbundene Szenen überbrücken, durch Vorverweise und Thematisierung des Vergangenen Spannung erzeugen und zur Hypothesenbildung anregen.

Durch reflektierende Distanz und nachfolgende Handlungsbeschleunigung dient sie der ökonomischen Steuerung des Handlungsablaufs und ist damit ästhetisch bestimmend.

Am Ende des Dramas stellt sie als Theaterkonvention in Form des Epilogs die beabsichtigte Rezeptionsperspektive des Autors sicher.
