Ein Slingatron ist die Idee für eine Art spiralförmige Starteinrichtung für Satelliten und andere in den Weltraum zu befördernde Fracht. Die Beschleunigung erfolgt innerhalb eines spiralförmig gebogenen Rohrs durch mechanische Schwingungen. Mit jeder Schwingungsperiode erfolgt im Rohr ein Vortrieb entlang der nach außen größer werdenden Spirale. Der gestrichelte Pfeil beschreibt die kreisförmige Schwingung der gesamten Spirale. Der Funktionsprinzip ähnelt dem eines Hula-Hoop-Reifens.

Grundprinzip mit Fahrrad-Schutzblech

Das Grundprinzip kann jeder selbst ausprobieren: Ein altes gebogenes Fahrrad-Schutzblech wird an einem Ende in die Hand genommen. An diesem Ende wird ein Stein in das Blech eingelegt. Man bewegt nun mit einer ausladenden Armbewegung das Blech samt Stein kreisförmig in Richtung des anderen Endes. Dabei gleitet der Stein an der Innenseite des Bleches entlang und verlässt das Blech am anderen Ende mit enormer Geschwindigkeit. Der gestrichelte Pfeil beschreibt die Bewegungsrichtung des Bleches.

Hintergrund für die Entwicklung einer solchen Starteinrichtung ist der hohe Kosten- und Materialaufwand, der momentan mit dem Transport (z.B. mit Hilfe von Raumfähren oder Raumschiffen) von Fracht in die Erdumlaufbahn verbunden ist.
