Shovelware

Die abfällige Bezeichnung shovelware (dt. „Schaufel-Ware“) bezieht sich auf Software, die mehr für die Quantität der Programme bekannt ist, und weniger für Qualität oder Nutzen.

Die Bezeichnung wird meist für Software auf CD-ROMs verwendet, deren große Kapazität manche Produzenten dazu verleitet, sie mit allerlei Daten zu füllen (Beispiel: 20 verschiedene Bild-Konverter, die alle in etwa das gleiche tun), damit sie mit dem großen Umfang des Produkts werben können.

Die Bezeichnung wurde analog zu Freeware, Shareware etc. gebildet. Anstatt die Programme zu selektieren und in die CD zu integrieren, wurde sie, ohne genauer hinzusehen, einfach „darauf geschaufelt“.
