Sheikh

Der Scheich (auch Schaich, Sheikh, Shaikh, Shaykh, Schech; arabischشيخ‎, DMG šaiḫÄltester“, „Greis“) ist ursprünglich das Stammesoberhaupt bei den arabischen Beduinen. Der Begriff wird heute häufig als Titel für führende Persönlichkeiten des geistlichen oder geistigen Lebens im arabischen Kulturraum eingesetzt, sowohl von Muslimen als auch von Angehörigen anderer Religionen.

Im Sufismus wird dieser Titel für das Oberhaupt eines Derwisch-Ordens (Tariqa) und für einen Sufi-Heiligen verwendet.
