Bacitracin ist ein Arzneistoff und Polypeptid-Antibiotikum, welcher die Zellwandsynthese einiger Bakterienarten hemmt. Bacitracin ist gegen grampositive Bakterien (Staphylokokken, Enterokokken) sowie gegen Neisserien und Haemophilus influenzae wirksam. Gegen andere gramnegative Bakterien und Pilze zeigt es keine Wirksamkeit.

Gewonnen wird es aus Kulturen des Bacillus subtilis (einige Quellen nennen auch den Bacillus licheniformis) und als Zinksalz in wässrigen Tinkturen, Salben, Pasten oder als Pulver verarbeitet.

Pharmakologie

Wirkmechanismus

Bacitracin greift in die bakterielle Murein-Biosynthese ein. Es wirkt hier als Komplexbildner mit Undecaprenol-diphosphat und inhibiert so den Membrantransport der Murein-Bausteine durch den Lipidcarrier Bactoprenol.

Anwendung

Da das Antibiotikum stark nephrotoxisch (nierenschädigend) ist, wird es nur äußerlich (topisch) angewendet. Eingesetzt wird es bei großflächigen oder stark verschmutzten Wunden, wie Biss-, Stich-, Schürf- und Risswunden, sowie oberflächlichen Hautinfektionen, Otitis externa (Entzündung des äußeren Ohrs) und infektionsgefährdeten Brandwunden. Hier wird es ein bis vier Mal täglich auf die betroffenen Hautstellen aufgebracht.

Markt

Jährlich werden etwa 200 Tonnen Bacitracin als antibiotischer Futtermittelzusatz sowie etwa 4 Tonnen zur Wundheilung eingesetzt. Trotz der Mengenunterschiede stellt das Wundheilmittel ein Marktvolumen von etwa 100 Millionen Dollar und der Futtermittelzusatz von etwa 20 Millionen Dollar jährlich dar.[1]
