SMSC

Das Short Message Service Center (SMSC) ist ein Bestandteil des digitalen GSM-Funknetzwerkes und ist für die Speicherung und die Auslieferung von Nachrichten des Short Message Service (SMS) zuständig.

Sobald ein Netzteilnehmer eine Kurzmitteilung an einen anderen Teilnehmer versendet, so wird diese an das SMSC weitergeleitet. Das SMSC speichert diese Nachricht und leitet die SMS weiter, sobald das Mobiltelefon des Empfängers erreichbar ist. Die Nachrichten werden während eines konfigurierbaren Zeitraums (meist 48 Stunden) vorgehalten und nach Ablauf dieser Zeitspanne vom SMSC automatisch gelöscht.

Short Messages können auch von einem Netzelement im IP-Netzwerk an ein SMSC mit den Protokollen UCP oder SMPP weitergeleitet werden. Diese Möglichkeit wird von Mobilfunkbetreibern genutzt, um automatisch generierte Short Messages zur Information oder im Rahmen von Mehrwertdiensten an Mobilfunkteilnehmer zu versenden.

Für die Übertragung der Kurznachrichten hat das Europäische Institut für Telekommunikationsnormen (engl. European Telecommunication Standards Institute, ETSI) folgende Netzwerkprotokolle standardisiert.
