Die Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, abgekürzt auch RSPB, ist Europas größte Organisation, die sich um den Schutz von Wildvögeln kümmert. Über eine Million Mitglieder gehören dieser Organisation an. Das sind vergleichsweise mehr, als Großbritanniens drei größten politischen Parteien Mitglieder haben.
Die RSPB wurde 1889 in England gegründet. Gründungszweck war es, die Verwendung des Gefieders von Haubentauchern in der Modeindustrie zu stoppen. Modistinnen verarbeiteten diese Federn damals vor allem für den Schmuck von Hüten oder verarbeiteten sie zur Dekoration von Kragen. Aufgrund der intensiven Bejagung stand der Haubentaucher kurz vor dem Aussterben.
Im Jahre 2001 unterhielt der RSPB in Großbritannien 168 Schutzgebiete für Vögel, die insgesamt eine Fläche von 1.150 Quadratkilometern belegen. Der Hauptsitz befindet sich heute in Bedfordshire, Großbritannien. Ein Säbelschnäbler ziert heute das Logo dieser Organisation. Dieser Vogel wurde 1940 wieder in Großbritannien eingeführt, nachdem er dort ausgestorben war.
