Romani Union

Als International Romani Union bzw. Romano Internacionalno Jekhethanibe auf dem 2. Welt-Roma-Kongreß im April 1978 in Genf gegründet ist die heutige International Roma Union (IRU) die wichtigste internationale Interessenvertretung der Roma. Die wesentlichen Zielsetzungen waren die Anerkennung der Roma als eigenständige ethnische Minderheit bei der UNO, die Verbesserung des rechtlichen Status und die Erhaltung der Roma-Kultur. Zum Präsidenten wählte der Gründungskongreß den tschechisch-schweizerischen Arzt Jan Cibula. Zu den Kongreßteilnehmern wie auch zu den Gründern der IRU gehörten neben Roma jenische Repräsentanten der Schweizer Radgenossenschaft der Landstrasse.[1] Die IRU gehört seit 1979 als nichtstaatliche Organisation (NGO) mit konsultativem Status dem Wirtschafts- und Sozialrat der Vereinten Nationen (Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ECOSOC) an. Schwerpunkt der Arbeit ist nach wie vor der Einsatz für die Bürgerrechte der Roma.
