Newt Gingrich

Newton Leroy "Newt" Gingrich (* 17. Juni 1943 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) ist ein US-amerikanischer Politiker und ehemaliger republikanischer Kongressabgeordneter des Bundesstaats Georgia (1979 bis 1999). Von 1995 bis 1999 war er Sprecher des Repräsentantenhauses. Mit ihm wird die Republican Revolution assoziiert, die im Wahlkampf um den Kongress 1994 erstmals seit vier Jahrzehnten zu einer republikanischen Mehrheit geführt hat. 1995 wählte ihn das Magazin Time zur Person des Jahres. Er spielte anschließend eine führende Rolle in der gescheiterten Amtsenthebung von Präsident Bill Clinton wegen der Lewinsky-Affäre, musste sich jedoch selbst wegen einer außerehelichen Affäre aus der Politik zurückziehen.

Seit 1999 arbeitet er als Politikberater und TV-Kommentator.

Familie

Newt Gingrich wurde als Newton Leroy McPherson geboren, als Sohn des neunzehnjährigen Newton Searles McPherson und der sechzehnjährigen Kathleen Daugherty, die im September 1942 geheiratet hatten.[1][2] Seine Halbschwester ist Candace Gingrich.


Bildungsweg

Nach seinem Schulabschluss an der Baker High School in Columbus (Georgia) 1961 besuchte Gingrich die Emory University in Atlanta von der er ein B.A. 1965 erhielt.

Politische Positionierung

Einwanderung

Gingrich unterstützt ein "Gastarbeiterprogramm" für mexikanische Staatsbürger. Er befürwortet ebenfalls die Idee, dass manche dieser Gastarbeiter die Möglichkeit der Einbürgerung haben sollten.

Frühe Wahlkämpfe

Schon 1974 und 1976 kandidierte Gingrich erfolglos um das Amt des Delegierten des sechsten Wahlbezirks von Georgia, das von den südlichen Vororten von Atlanta bis zur Grenze mit Alabama erstreckte. Beide Male verlor er an den Amtsinhaber, den Demokraten Jack Flynt.
