Allgemeines Recycling-Symbol

Der Recycling-Code dient der Kennzeichnung von verschiedenen Materialien zwecks Rückführung in den Wiederverwertungskreislauf (Recycling). Der Code besteht aus dem Recyclingsymbol aus drei (oft grünen) Pfeilen, die den Verwertungskreislauf widerspiegeln sollen, und einer Nummer, die das Material kennzeichnet. Zumeist wird darunter auch noch ein Kürzel angegeben, das die Werkstoffgruppe angibt.

Die Kennzeichnungen für Kunststoffe (Nummern 01 bis 07) wurden unter der Bezeichnung SPI resin identification coding system 1988 erstmals von der Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) veröffentlicht. Die Buchstaben-Kürzel für Kunststoffe basieren auf den genormten Kurzzeichen für Kunststoffe.

Um den Sortieraufwand zu reduzieren, werden teilweise die Wertstoffe mit Unterstützung des Konsumenten vor der Wiederverwertung vorsortiert. Zu diesem Zweck haben viele Städte Recyclinghöfe zur Entsorgung von Wertstoffen eingerichtet. Diese können neben dem in Deutschland etablierten System „Grüner Punkt“ und dem Entsorgen von Altglas an den entsprechenden Sammelstellen benutzt werden.

Verbundwerkstoffe

Von 80 bis 100 sind die Nummern des Recycling-Codes für Verbundwerkstoffe reserviert:

  • Die Nummern 80 bis 85 kennzeichnen Verbundwerkstoffe aus Papier oder Pappe in Kombination mit Metall, Kunststoff, Aluminium und Weißblech
  • Die Nummern 90 bis 92 kennzeichnen Verbundwerkstoffe aus Kunststoff und Metall
  • Die Nummern 95 bis 98 kennzeichnen Verbundwerkstoffe aus Glas und Metall
