Die Randstad ist ein Ballungsgebiet im Westen der Niederlande und erstreckt sich über Teile der Provinzen Nordholland, Südholland, Flevoland und Utrecht.

Zur Randstad gehören die urbanen Gebiete von und um Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, Den Haag, Delft, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Gouda, Utrecht, Hilversum und Almere mit einer Einwohnerzahl von insgesamt ungefähr acht Millionen Menschen.

Die Randstad macht 20 % der Gesamtfläche der Niederlande aus, in diesem Ballungsgebiet wohnen aber mehr als 40 % der niederländischen Bevölkerung.

Die Städte der Randstad liegen zwischen minimal 26 km (Den Haag - Rotterdam) und maximal 77 km (Amsterdam - Rotterdam) voneinander entfernt. Die Gebiete bilden zudem einen Siedlungsring um das sogenannte Groene Hart (grünes Herz), eine grüne Lunge im Zentrum der Randstad, das hauptsächlich als Naherholungs- und Naturschutzgebiet genutzt wird und eine Art Pufferfunktion zwischen den dichtbevölkerten Städten des Ballungsraumes übernimmt.

Zusammen mit dem Groene Hart und der Stadt Almere bildet die Randstad das Gebiet Randstad Holland.

Mit einem Bruttoregionalprodukt von 216,3 Milliarden Euro liegt diese Region, das wirtschaftliche Herz der Niederlande, im europäischen Vergleich hinter London, Paris, Rhein-Ruhr und Mailand auf dem fünften Platz.

Dieses Gebiet wurde vom Niederländischen Ministerium für Wohnungswesen, Raumordnung und Umwelt im Rahmen eines raumplanerischen Entwicklungsplanes definiert und wird gezielt gefördert.

Der Begriff Randstad (dt. Randstadt, Saumstadt, Kantenstadt) wurde in den 1950er-Jahren von einem Direktor der niederländischen Fluggesellschaft KLM geprägt, der die Region aus der Luft sah. Die sich ausdehnenden Städte bilden annäherungsweise einen Kreis und verschmelzen so zu einer Ringstadt.
