PuTTY ist ein von Simon Tatham entwickelter freier SSH- und Telnet-Client für Microsoft Windows, Unix, Mac OS X (in Arbeit) und Symbian OS (inoffiziell). Er dient dazu, eine Verbindung von einem Rechner zu einem Server herzustellen. Dabei wird vor dem Verbindungsaufbau die Identität des Benutzers mittels einer der bereitgestellten Methoden zur Authentifizierung überprüft (Standard-Unix-Abfrage).

In der so bereitgestellten textorientierten Emulation einer Terminal-Sitzung können direkt Befehle abgesetzt werden, die auf dem fernen System ausgeführt werden. Eine grafische Ausgabe ist nicht möglich, jedoch kann ein X-Server genutzt werden, der auf dem Client läuft. Seit der Version 0.58 wird zudem IPv6 unterstützt. Zusätzlich wird seit der Version 0.59 auch die serielle Schnittstelle unterstützt.

Es existieren zahlreiche PuTTY-Derivate, die entweder zusätzlich ein Benachrichtigungsfeld bieten, von einem Live-USB-Stick ausführbar sind, oder bei denen es zum Teil möglich ist, die Änderungen in eine Datei und nicht in die Windows-Registrierungsdatenbank zu speichern.
