Handlung

Der zehnjährige Paul (Harry Eden) lebt mit seiner Mutter Mel (Molly Parker) und seinem jüngeren Bruder in einer heruntergekommenen Gegend im Londoner East End. Nach dem Tod des Vaters ist Paul plötzlich auf sich alleine gestellt, denn seine Mutter Mel hat die Verantwortung für ihr Leben längst an ihren Dealer Lenny (David Wenham) abgegeben, der sie nicht nur mit Heroin versorgt, sondern auch ihr Liebhaber ist. Doch Paul kämpft unerbittlich darum, seine drogenabhängige Mutter zurückzugewinnen und seinen kleinen Bruder zu beschützen. Hilfe erfährt er dabei von der befreundeten Kellnerin Louise (Keira Knightley). Erst als Mel am Boden zerstört ist, und mit den verheerenden Auswirkungen ihrer Drogensucht auf ihre Familie konfrontiert wird, gibt es wieder Hoffnung...
