Das Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (kurz CPE, häufig auch Proficiency) ist die anspruchsvollste der Englisch-Prüfungen der Universität Cambridge. Im Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmen des Europarats entspricht das CPE der höchsten Stufe C2. Das CPE richtet sich an Menschen, die nicht englischer Muttersprache sind, und belegt, dass die betreffenden Personen ein sehr hohes Niveau in der englischen Sprache erreicht haben und sich in fast jeder Situation stilsicher und fehlerfrei verständigen können.

Das CPE wird an vielen Hochschulen als Zugangsvorraussetzung für englischsprachige Studiengänge anerkannt, oft reichen hierfür jedoch auch die weniger umfangreichen Tests CAE oder FCE aus.

Als höchstmögliche Prüfung im Rahmen der ESOL-Prüfungen liegt das CPE-Niveau unter anderem auch um eine Stufe höher als das weltweit anerkannte Business English Certificate der höchsten Stufe (BEC Higher).

Die Prüfung besteht aus fünf Teilen, deren Umfang mit insgesamt etwa 360 Minuten zum Teil weit über dem der übrigen ESOL-Prüfungen liegt.
