Privacy Enhanced Mail

Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) ist ein Konzept, welches diverse Sicherheitsdienste (Vertraulichkeit, authentischer Datenursprung, Herkunftsbeweis) für den E-Mail-Verkehr definiert.

PEM ist ein early proposal von der IETF. Hier sind die Zertifizierungsstellen hierarchisch organisiert. Benutzer von PEM müssen jede Nachricht unterschreiben. Es ist für sie nicht möglich, anonyme Botschaften zu versenden.

Bei PEM hat jeder die Möglichkeit die Unterschrift zu überprüfen, auch wenn die Nachricht selbst nicht gelesen werden kann.

Eine bedeutende Einschränkung von PEM ist, dass mit diesem Standard nur Nachrichten im 7-Bit-Format (also hauptsächlich Textdateien) übertragen lassen. Nachrichten im MIME Standard können also nicht übertragen werden.

PEM wurde vom TeleTrusT e.V. neu überarbeitet (siehe Mailtrust).
