Das Polk County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Florida der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Bartow.

Geschichte

Das Polk County wurde am 8. Februar 1861 aus dem östlichen Teil des Hillsborough County gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach James K. Polk, dem 11. Präsidenten der USA. Seine Amtszeit dauerte von 1845 bis 1849.

Geografie

Das County hat eine Fläche von 5.206 Quadratkilometern, wovon 351 Quadratkilometer Wasserfläche sind. Polk County hat 554 natürliche Süßwasserseen. Das County grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: Lake County, Osceola County, Highlands County, Hardee County, Hillsborough County, Pasco County und Sumter County.

Wirtschaft

Die Hauptwirtschaftszweige im Polk County sind der Phosphatabbau, der Tourismus und die Landwirtschaft. Die Phosphatlager werden auf eine Größe von etwa 500.000 Acres (2,000 km²) geschätzt und machen 75 Prozent der nationalen und 25 Prozent der weltweiten Phosphatvorkommen aus. Im Jahr 1998 wurden im Polk County 14,7 Millionen Tonnen produziert.

Nach der Volkszählung im Jahr 2000 lebten im Polk County 483.924 Menschen in 187.233 Haushalten und 132.373 Familien. Die Bevölkerungsdichte betrug 100 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 79,58 Prozent Weißen, 13,54 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,38 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 0,93 Prozent Asiaten, 0,04 Prozent Bewohnern aus dem pazifischen Inselraum und 3,82 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 1,71 Prozent stammten von zwei oder mehr Ethnien ab. 9,49 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

Von den 187.233 Haushalten hatten 29,0 Prozent Kinder und Jugendliche unter 19 Jahre, die bei ihnen lebten. 54,4 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare, 12,0 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter und 29,3 Prozent waren keine Familien. 24,1 Prozent waren Singlehaushalte und in 11,1 Prozent lebten Menschen im Alter von 65 Jahren oder darüber. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,52 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße betrug 2,96 Personen.

24,4 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 8,3 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 26,4 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44, 22,5 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64 und 18,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung war 65 Jahre oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 39 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen kamen statistisch 96,3 männliche Personen und auf 100 Frauen im Alter ab 18 Jahren kamen 93,1 Männer.

Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 36.036 USD, das Durchschnittseinkommen der Familien 41.442 USD. Männer hatten ein Durchschnittseinkommen von 31.396. USD, Frauen 22.406 USD. Das Prokopfeinkommen betrug 18.302 USD. 12,9 Prozent der Bevölkerung und 9,4 Prozent der Familien lebten unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. [4]
