Point of Presence

Als Point of Presence (PoP) wird ein physischer Knotenpunkt für eine Verbindung in ein (privates) Datennetzwerk bezeichnet. Es gibt kleine, unbemannte PoPs, die nur aus einem Schaltschrank mit etwas Technik bestehen (zum Beispiel USV, Router, Switch, Fernwartung) aber auch sehr große PoPs, die ganze Etagen oder Gebäude einnehmen und Büros angegliedert haben (zum Beispiel DE-CIX).

Typische PoPs sind die Einwahlknoten und Breitband-PoPs von Internet Service Providern (ISPs) oder Interconnection-Points von Internet-Backbone-Providern und Telekommunikationsunternehmen.

Ein virtueller Point of Presence (V-PoP oder VPOP) ist in der Telekommunikationsbranche ein PoP eines Telekommunikationsunternehmens, der aber von einem anderen Unternehmen (bspw. einem anderen Telekommunikationsanbieter) verwaltet und betrieben wird.
