Podunk

Podunk [ˈpō-ˌdəŋk] bezeichnet ursprünglich einen einst in Connecticut ansässigen Indianerstamm, der heute Mattabesic genannt wird.

Davon abgeleitet tragen mehrere Ortschaften in den Vereinigten Staaten diesen Namen:

  • Podunk, Connecticut - ein Ortsteil der Stadt Guilford, Connecticut
  • Podunk, New York - ein Ortsteil der Stadt Ulysses, New York
  • Podunk, Vermont - ein Ortsteil der Stadt Wardsboro, Vermont

In der amerikanischen Umgangssprache ist Podunk als Synonym für einen kleinen, unbedeutenden Ort geläufig, vergleichbar etwa dem deutschen Posemuckel. Besonders im militärischen Slang ist die häufigste Bezeichnung für einen abgelegenen Ort hingegen Bumfuck, Egypt.[1]
