Plonk[1] ist ein lautmalerisches Wort, welches das Geräusch nachahmen soll, das in der Vorstellung derer, die es verwenden, ein Eintrag beim „Aufprall“ im Killfile hervorruft. Im Usenet kursiert zur Unterstützung der Metapher die Erklärung, plonk sei das Geräusch, mit dem ein Kaffeefilter auf dem Boden eines Mülleimers aufschlägt. Die Eintragung einer Adresse ins Killfile wird auch als Plonken (nicht zu verwechseln mit Plenken) bezeichnet.

Die erste aufgezeichnete Verwendung stammt vom 10. November 1989.[2]

Üblicherweise versteht man Plonk im Usenet (und nur dort) auch als Abkürzung für: "Please leave our Newsgroup, Kid.", also als Ansage, dass derjenige, an den diese Äußerung gerichtet ist, nicht erwünscht ist.
